§ 7-121. Classifications and qualifications of license applicants.

  • The classifications of the various branches of the electrical industry and qualifications required of applicants shall be as follows:

    (1)

    Electrical contractor:

    a.

    Electrical contractor shall be defined to include any person, member and/or employee of a firm, partnership or corporation engaged in the business of installing, erecting or repairing, or contracting to install, erect, or repair electric wires or conductors to be used for the transmission of electric light, heat or power purposes. The installation, repair or alteration of wiring or equipment of thirty (30) volts or more or the connection of wiring of thirty (30) volts or more shall be done by a contractor employing a master electrician.

    b.

    Any person, member and/or employee of a firm, partnership or corporation desiring to engage in the business as an electrical contractor may apply for and be issued a license upon satisfactory proof that he or it is either a master electrician or employs a master electrician as its superintendent or manager and shall pay a license fee as provided in the privilege license ordinance of the city and shall execute the bond hereinafter provided.

    c.

    Before any person shall engage in the business of electrical contracting, the name, residence and place of business of such person shall be registered with the electrical inspector. Such registration shall indicate the name of the master electrician managing or supervising the business of such person as superintendent or manager and the date on which such person qualified as a master electrician under the terms and provisions of this division. Every change of place of business, or change in the name of the organization or change in the licensed master electrician in charge of the business shall require immediate notice thereof to the electrical inspector, who shall make the proper changes in the record heretofore mentioned. Every electrical contractor shall promptly report to the electrical inspector the death, resignation or discharge of his or its master electrician; and if another master electrician is not secured within three (3) days after the next succeeding examination held by the state board of electrical examiners, the license of such contractor shall be suspended until a new licensed master electrician is employed.

    d.

    No licensed master electrician can represent more than one (1) firm at a time. The master electrician will be responsible for the layout and supervision of all electrical installations performed by the company he represents. The actual work shall be done by a qualified master or journeyman electrician.

    (2)

    Electrical sign contractor:

    a.

    Electrical sign contractor shall be defined to include any person engaged in the business of manufacture, installation, erection and repair of electrically illuminated or operated signs. They shall be entitled to install, repair and maintain electrical equipment and wiring within the sign enclosure or structure and make supply connections provided there is an approved outlet of sufficient capacity available within fifteen (15) feet of the sign to be connected. Electrical work shall be done by a master or journeyman electrician. Only those electricians currently licensed as specialist sign electricians will be permitted to retain that classification. No more licenses will be issued for specialist sign electricians.

    b.

    Electrical sign contractors shall pay the same license fee as electrical contractor.
