§ 7-203. Placement of detectors.

  • The owners of all dwellings shall install approved smoke detectors as follows:

    (1)

    At least one (1) approved smoke detector shall be installed in each dwelling unit in accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions. The smoke detector shall not be installed closer than six (6) inches from the wall when installed on the ceiling. And the smoke detector shall not be installed closer than six (6) inches nor further than twelve (12) inches from the ceiling when installed on the wall. This subsection shall not apply to attics or basements, unless they are normally used as living areas.

    (2)

    In a multistory dwelling unit, approved smoke detectors shall be provided on the highest habitable level.

    (3)

    The owners of all dwellings may request advice from the city inspection department or the city fire department for the proper placement of approved smoke detectors.
